More than 100 passengers on Cunard’s Queen Victoria have come down with a gastrointestinal illness.

The US Centers for Disease Control said that, so far, 116 of the1,824 onboard have been affected.

Fifteen crew members have also been sick, it said.

The main symptoms are diarrhoea and vomiting, but the cause of the illness has yet to be confirmed.

Queen Victoria is on a 107-night world cruise, which left Southampton on 11 January.

The ship is currently sailing a 16-night leg between Florida and San Francisco, which departed on 22 January, the day the first symptoms were reported.

In response to the outbreak, the crew increased cleaning and disinfection procedures – according to the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan – and isolated the ill passengers and crew.

A spokesperson for the cruise line issued the following statement: “Cunard confirmed that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria.

“They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board.”
