The international airport on Mauritius has closed until further notice because of a Class 3 cyclone.
A message on Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport’s website says: “Further to the issue of a Cyclone Warning Class 3 by the Mauritius Meteorological Services in connection with the severe Tropical Storm Eleanor, Airport Terminal Operations Ltd (ATOL) wishes to inform intending passengers and the general public that SSR International airport will be temporarily closed on Thursday 22 February 2024 as from 07:30 (local time), until further notice.
“Intending passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for further information on the status of their flights and not to proceed to the airport, unless receiving confirmation of the revised departure time.
“ATOL apologises for any inconvenience caused and reassures the public that it intends to resume its activities as soon as possible.”
The UK Foreign Office updated its guidance on Tuesday afternoon. At that time, the cyclone had been designated a lower category.
The FCDO’s latest advice says: “A Class 2 cyclone warning is currently in force in Mauritius. Due to severe Tropical Storm Eleanor, the weather in Mauritius is expected to deteriorate over the coming days. Take precautions and follow instructions and updates from local authorities closely.
“Cyclones can cause extensive damage to property. During a cyclone you’re not allowed to leave your accommodation, and car insurance policies often become invalid.”
The FCDO has told Brits to follow the advice of the Mauritian government information service, check Mauritius Meteorological Services and, if in need of urgent consular assistance, contact +230 660 4900, selecting option 2.
