Independent travel agent Vic Griffiths, who set up south east agency group Horton Griffiths Travel in the late 1950s, has died, aged 96.

His friend, former Ramblers Walking Holidays Trade Manager and Mundicolor Sales Manager Tony Maniscalco said Vic died from acute diverticulitis on 15 January in Margate Hospital.

Tony said: “Many people will remember Vic as the founder of Horton Griffiths Travel, which was a highly regarded independent travel agent with five branches in Kent and south east London.

“The agency was originally a member of the NAITA [National Association of Independent Travel Agents] group, which then became Advantage Travel Centres.

“Of his many achievements, he wrote a book on becoming a travel agent and what it involves, called Alternative Travel by Vic Griffiths and was also the ABTA chairman for the Southeast region for many years. He was a long-standing member of the ITT and was a member of The Old Abtarians

“He lived for much of his life close to Orpington and latterly until his sad death just outside Whitstable in Kent.

“He and his agencies used to be good supporters of Mundicolor Holidays and we remained good friends and kept in contact for over 30 years, including last Christmas.

“He always offered advice and was like a second dad to me and many others. He was a real gentleman and so lovely. I will miss him terribly.”

His funeral will take place at 2pm on Thursday 1 February at Herne Bay Crematorium, Bullockstone Rd, Herne Bay CT6 7NF.

This will be followed by the wake at the Curious Cat public house nearby.

Tony said: “This will be a celebration of a fabulous man.”

Flowers can be sent to Welch & Son Chapel, 47-49 Downs Park, Herne Bay, CT6 6BY, to arrive no later than the morning of the funeral.

Vic’s family has asked travel industry colleagues wishing to attend the funeral to email Tony at s.maniscalco@tiscali.co.uk.
