Whether your clients are looking to relax on pristine beaches, snorkel in crystal clear waters, hike in lush rainforests or explore ancient cultural sites, the central American jewel of Belize could be their next dream destination.

Located on the Caribbean Sea, just south of Mexico, this former British colony is a land of natural wonders and cultural diversity that will appeal to families, adventure travellers and couples alike.

Is Belize good for a beach holiday?

With 174 miles of coastline, Belize boasts many picture-perfect beaches and is also home to the second-largest coral reef system in the world, providing an underwater paradise of colourful marine life, just steps from the sand, and the perfect opportunity for water-based activities such as snorkelling and diving.

Tell us about the Belize wildlife

Well over half of Belize is forested, creating a home for abundant wildlife, including jaguars and pumas. Venture into the dense jungle and you’ll see howler monkeys swing from the trees and hear the melodic songs of many different exotic birds or the tell-tale rattle of toucans.

Not to be missed is the expansive Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, at the foot of the Victoria Peak, which boasts the most concentrated jaguar population in the world, however, you still need to be lucky to see this elusive cat.

Belize is also a haven for crocodiles, manatees, bats and many different species of turtles, tortoises and other reptiles, which can be spotted on a canoe ride along the New River Lagoon in Orange Walk District.

What are the main cultural attractions in Belize?

Belize culture is a heady mix of Creole, Maya, East Indian, Garifuna and Mestizo, creating a melting pot of unique traditions, music and flavours.

To gain an insight into the once vast Maya empire, visit the ancient Mayan city of Caracol, at the centre of which is the 12th century Caana (Sky Palace) pyramid. Other intriguing sites include the seventh-century Temple of the Masonry Altars at Altun Ha, which visitors might recognise from the label of Belize’s Belikin beer, and the Mayan ruins at Lubaantun and Xunantunich.

Those with an adventurous spirit should also make a note to visit Actun Tunichil Muknal, a unique limestone cave and the site of past human sacrifices.

Depending on the time of year, visitors can also join in Belize’s vibrant celebrations, such as the Garifuna Settlement Day, a mid-November week-long celebration of parades, live music, drumming, dancing and traditional food including fish in coconut milk and mashed plantain.

What’s the weather like in Belize?

Belize has a sub-tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from a pleasant 23 to 29 degrees. The dry season runs from late February to May, and the wet season from June to November, though August and September also tend to be dry.
