Main resorts for the UK market

Hammamet

Hammamet (main picture) is Tunisia’s best known and most developed resort with unlimited opportunities for entertainment, giving a true taste of Tunisia.

Hammamet is also known for its vast and fine sandy beaches and its sparkling turquoise seas. It has a lot of hotels but is not a concrete jungle.

The resort is bursting with Jasmin, lemon and orange trees, vineyards and bougainvillea, dotted with fortresses inside its medina, which once held off invaders.

Yasmine Hammamet

Tunisia’s newest resort, located just south of Hammamet, has been created around a 740-berth marina and is mostly made up four- and five- star luxury hotels and attracts high-calibre clients.

Attractions include a sophisticated medina, spa centres, access to golf courses and miles of golden sandy beaches.

For those travelling with children, Carthage Land, a theme park with thrilling rides, and Blue Ice, the only ice rink in Tunisia, are a must.

Skanes/Monastir

Monastir is a small modern city that sits along the edge of a bright turquoise sea.

It is built on a peninsula overlooked by its large medieval Ribat (fortress) which is one of Tunisia’s most impressive monuments.

Its main beach is at Skanes, famous for its fine sand and well-equipped hotels. Visitors can find plenty of water sport options, from sailing and windsurfing to parascending and jet skiing and there are plenty of kids’ clubs.

Monastir has a charming fishing port and marina, where yachts moor from around the world. Tunisia’s former President, Habib Bourguiba, was born here. His mausoleum is here and his legacy is celebrated all around the city.

Mahdia

This is a new resort on the British market and is much quieter than the other main resorts.

It is built at rock level on a narrow peninsula and was traditionally a silk-weaving town. Its glorious past as the capital of the Fatimid dynasty is evident by its historic fortress and rich local heritages.

In addition to being well-known for its maritime cemetery, the local speciality of this fishing port is sardines, which are caught by lamplight.
