Law firm Irwin Mitchell is representing dozens of holidaymakers who say they were struck down by a vomiting bug while staying at a five-star hotel in the Greek islands.
The group of around 35 includes clients of both TUI and Jet2holidays who travelled to Kefalonia in mid to late July.
They said the holidaymakers, who all stayed at the Apollonion Asterias Resort & Spa, reported seeing others being sick at dining tables, in the swimming pool as well as in reception, and rodent droppings on sun loungers, were among the issues they reported.
Lawyer Jatinder Paul said: “We continue to be contacted by a growing number of people from across the UK who fell ill during holidays to this resort this summer.
“What’s of particular concern is that multiple families are reporting suffering the same serious symptoms and in a short timeframe. The ages of those affected range from one-year-old to 57.”
He said the firm was investigating the claims, adding: “Gastric illness can lead to serious and long-term health complications and its impact should never be downplayed. It’s vital that those with concerns about the resort are now supported.
“If during our investigations any issues are identified, action needs to be taken to reduce the risk of other holidaymakers falling ill in the future.
“We would be interested in speaking to anyone who may have been impacted by illness at this hotel who would be able to assist with our investigations.”
One client said that after she and her daughter fell ill, notices were put up outside the restaurant and pool area advising guests there had been sickness in the resort.
Responding to complaints on the travel review site TripAdvisor, the hotel admitted that it had received ‘many record cases’ but it claimed the stomach bug was an island-wide outbreak. In one response it said: “We catered for all our guests, providing for them and their families with Room Service.
“We might not have done everything excellent, but we tried our best, as we are a hotel not a hospital.”
In a statement, TUI said: “We are sorry to hear about these experiences as the health and safety of our customers is our biggest priority.
“Unfortunately, as this is now a legal matter, we are unable to comment any further.”
Travel Gossip understands that TUI did offer those booked to travel to the Apollonion from 20-26 July the option to move or cancel their holiday free of charge, but the operator declined to comment further on the claims.
Jet2holiday said it had not been contacted by Irwin Mitchell regarding the illness claims.
