EasyJet has grounded a further 55 flights today due to thunderstorms in the Gatwick Airport area after axing 54 last night, affecting an estimated 15,000 British travellers.

The low-cost carrier said the knock-on effect of last night’s cancellations was that more flights would have to be pulled on Monday because ‘a number of aircraft’ were out of position.

An easyJet spokesman said: “Thunderstorms in the Gatwick area which restricted the number of arrivals and departures on Sunday unfortunately resulted in disruption at London Gatwick Airport, including some diversions and cancellations which is having a knock-on impact this morning as a number of aircraft are out of position.

“We are doing all possible to minimise the impact on our customers, providing those on cancelled flights with options to rebook or receive a refund as well as hotel accommodation and meals where required.

“The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and while this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”

MailOnline reports easyJet said the flight disruption was ‘outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance’.

EasyJet’s website says ‘Compensation is only payable where the cause of the delay or cancellation is for reasons other than extraordinary circumstances’.

In a further inconvenience to travellers, urgent rail repairs are being made to the track between London Victoria and Gatwick, meaning fewer trains are able to run between these stations.

Gatwick Express said services running between these stations would either be cancelled, delayed or revised and disruption is expected until the end of the day.
