EasyJet holidays chief explains where operator is seeing bookings boom

EasyJet holidays says Brits are flocking to lesser-known spots in favourite destinations, such as Greece, Egypt and Morocco.

Chief Executive Garry Wilson said its customers are being enticed to new areas in already well-known countries by improvements in hotels and local infrastructure.

In Greece, he said the Peloponnese seems to be growing in popularity. Speaking to PA Media, he said: “There’s a lot of investment happening in Greece. Some of the smaller, maybe lesser-known areas have become popular.

“Certainly the Peloponnese looks to be growing in popularity. We launched Skiathos this year and that’s been really popular with customers.”

In Egypt, Garry said easyJet holidays’ new winter Luxor programme, which includes Nile cruises, has been ‘enormously popular’.

He said Agadir in Morocco was also ‘increasing in popularity’.

“Wherever there’s been investment in new hotels or new infrastructure in new areas, customers seem to jump on to that and think ‘let’s try that out’, as opposed to brand new destinations,” he told PA.

In contrast to its success in adding new resorts in established destinations, Garry said Montenegro – once tipped as the next holiday hotspot – only ‘does OK’.

Garry added that easyJet holidays, which is expected to make a pre-tax profit of more than £180 million this year, is ‘focused on sustainable, profitable growth’ and offering ‘really good value to customers’.
