Passengers flying from all European airports will once again be limited to carrying containers holding no more than 100ml of liquid or gel in their hand-luggage from next month.
The temporary restriction, being reintroduced by the European Commission on 1 September, even applies to airports that have installed new CT scanners.
Passengers had been promised that the introduction of the new scanners would mean an end to the restriction on liquids in their carry-on bags.
While the majority of EU airports have yet to fully install the new scanners, they are in place at a handful and passengers travelling from these airports have been allowed to carry containers of up to two litres in their hand luggage.
However, the EU aviation authority said it was reintroducing the blanket ban on containers carrying more than 100ml due to ‘a temporary technical issue’.
The UK Government reintroduced hand luggage restrictions in June, including at airports like London City, Teesside and Birmingham, which have new CT scanners in place.
It has not given any indication of when the liquids ban will be lifted, despite warning airports that the new scanners must be in place by next summer.
