Ethiopian Airlines is to return to London Gatwick with flights to Addis Ababa from this winter.
The airline revealed to Travel Gossip in July that it was looking at alternatives to London Heathrow to support its expansion plans from the UK.
UK Sales Manager Mohammed Ali said that while Ethiopian Airlines wanted to expand at London’s premier airport, from where it operates a daily service, it realised it might not be able to find the right take off and landing slots at the busy hub.
It has now confirmed that it will launch three flights a week from Gatwick instead, starting on 21 November.
The Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday services will complement the airline’s flights from Heathrow.
An Airbus A350 will operate the Gatwick flights, with business and economy class.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said: “We have a 50-year relation with UK. We give high regards to our Heathrow services and now we are excited to add Gatwick to our vast global network.”
The airline, a member of the Star Alliance, last served Gatwick in 2006.
Gatwick VP Aviation Development Stephanie Wear said: “We are delighted to welcome Ethiopian Airlines back to London Gatwick this winter. As the largest carrier in Africa, this is an excellent addition to our network and adds a valuable, direct connection to Eastern Africa.”
