Expedia is launching an in-app travel planning service powered by AI chatbot ChatGPT.

The OTA’s app users can get recommendations on places to go, where to stay, how to get around, what to see and do based on the conversation with ChatGPT.

Hotels discussed in the chat will be saved as users choose start dates, add flights, cars or activities.

The trip planning service is at the beta launch phase, meaning the user experience is being evaluated before the final launch.

Expedia said: “It’s also important to remember that while many measures have been taken to limit inaccurate results and inappropriate responses, at times the experience may not work exactly as expected.”

Expedia added that feedback would be reviewed to make sure the service met its standards.

Expedia Group Chief Executive Peter Kern said: “By integrating ChatGPT into the Expedia app and combining it with our other AI-based shopping capabilities, like hotel comparison, price tracking for flights and trip collaboration tools, we can now offer travellers an even more intuitive way to build their perfect trip.”

Expedia also recently built a plug-in for ChatGPT, so holidaymakers can start a conversation directly on ChatGPT’s site and then book when they are ready with the OTA.

ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and was developed by Californian AI firm OpenAI.
