Explora Journeys has confirmed it has ordered two new hydrogen-powered ships.

As part of MSC Group’s luxury arm, Explora V (pictured artist impression) and Explora VI will be built at the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Trieste and will join the fleet in 2027 and 2028.

As well as being hydrogen-powered, both ships will also feature a new generation of LNG engines and will be capable of using alternative fuels such as bio and synthetic gas and methanol.

This latest announcement for a fifth and sixth ship will bring the cost of its fleet to €3.5 billion.

Explora Journeys’ first ship, Explora I launched this summer, and is currently operating in Northern Europe. Explora II will join in summer 2024, Explora III in summer 2026 and then Explora IV in early 2027.

MSC Group’s Executive Chairman – Cruise Division Pierfrancesco Vago, said: “We are seeing continued growth in the luxury segment and the investment in these two new ships shows our commitment to continue to grow within this sector as well as to invest in ships of the future.

“Together with Fincantieri we will study the newest technology that the world has to offer and continue with our commitment to introduce these technologies to drive efficiencies across the whole spectrum of ship performance.”
