Florida is one of the most popular US states for British visitors, mainly – but not exclusively – due to its numerous theme parks and beautiful beaches. Here are some useful facts to help you sell the Sunshine State:
The northern part of the state gets very busy in the summer, while the central and southern areas are generally more popular in the winter. Fort Lauderdale, Miami, the Florida Keys in the south, and Naples on the west coast, have the warmest water during the winter. Orlando and Kissimmee are in the centre.
Officially the hurricane season in Florida is during the summer, from June to November, with the riskiest period from mid-August to mid-October. However, the state is very large, so even during hurricane season, many areas remain unaffected.
Florida’s major theme parks including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and Seaworld are in Orlando. Orlando International Airport is the closest airport. Orlando Sanford is about 45-60 minutes’ drive away and Tampa International about 90 minutes’ drive.
Daytona Beach, Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna Beach and Cocoa Beach are about an hour’s drive from Orlando on the Atlantic coast. The closest beach on the Gulf Coast is Clearwater Beach, about two hours’ west of Orlando.
Less than an hour from Orlando, on the east coast, is the Kennedy Space Center. A visit to the theme parks can also be combined with a city break in Miami, in the south, taking a drive-through safari or kayaking in Kissimmee or a beach break in Florida Keys (coral islands) just off the south coast, which are known for snorkelling, fishing and scuba diving.
The Everglades National Park, a vast area of wetlands teeming with wildlife, is about an hour from Miami and an easy drive along a tarmaced road. The national park, known as ‘the river of grass’ is home to alligators, crocodiles and many different species of birds, which can be spotted on boat trips, hikes or bike rides.
