The Foreign Office is warning travellers to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport should check local train services following a fatal train crash.

One person died and at least 30 people were injured after the passenger train collided with a crane in southern Netherlands early this morning.

The accident happened close to the town of Voorschoten, between Hague and Amsterdam.

Local news agencies said a fire broke out in the rear carriage of the train following the impact.

Of the 50-plus people on board, at least 19 were taken to hospital, while others were treated at the scene, according to emergency services.

In a travel update issued this morning, the Foreign Office said travel was disrupted around Leiden, including travel to Schiphol Airport.

It added: “Travellers should check the Dutch Railways (NS) website for more information on alternative routes.”
