Flight disruption at Gatwick and Heathrow has continued into Monday, due to the knock-on impact of bad weather in the UK and in Europe over the weekend.
British Airways confirmed 40 flights at both airports were cancelled or delayed on Sunday and Monday, while Sussex Express reports eight easyJet flights to and from Europe are among 33 Gatwick flights cancelled or delayed today (19 June).
A BA spokesperson told Travel Gossip: “There has been a knock-on impact [from the bad weather].”
EasyJet said it was responding to a request from Gatwick to airlines to reduce their flying programmes.
EasyJet flights that have been cancelled today (Monday) include its Bilbao services to and from the Spanish city, along with inbound flights from Belfast and Malaga.
Local reports in Gibraltar said passengers travelling between the British territory and Gatwick were left stranded on Sunday (18 June) night due to ‘severe weather conditions’ over London.
An easyJet spokesperson said: “easyJet operated around 1,700 flights yesterday and will operate a similar number today however severe weather conditions yesterday affecting the UK and much of Europe unfortunately resulted in disruption across some UK airports and like other airlines operating at Gatwick, easyJet was instructed to reduce its flying programme.
“We have been doing all possible to minimise the impact on our customers, providing those on cancelled flights with options to rebook including with alternative carriers or receive a refund, as well as hotel accommodation and meals where required.
“The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and while this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”
There are also delays to three transatlantic BA flights from Las Vegas, Orlando and Cancun, according to FlightRadar24 data.
However, BA blamed rotational delays for the disruption to those flights.
