Flights and trains cancelled in Japan ahead of Typhoon Ampil

Hundreds of flights and bullet train services have been cancelled in Japan for Friday, when Typhoon Ampil is expected to cross Tokyo.

Already the seventh typhoon of the 2024 season is bringing winds of 125kmph, with gusts of 180kmph, according to Japan’s meteorological service.

The department has forecast up to 200mm of rain will fall in the Kanto-Koshin region by Saturday.

Japan Airlines is planning to cancel 191 domestic and 26 international flights at Tokyo’s Haneda international airport, affecting more than 38,000 passengers, according to The Independent.

All Nippon Airways has cancelled 280 domestic flights on Friday, which will affect about 60,400 passengers.

Central Japan Railway is planning to cancel all Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya on Friday. Other lines are expecting to operate with a reduced service.

Japan’s Coast Guard has asked large ships to evacuate Tokyo Bay and to avoid sailing out to sea.
