Nearly 800 flights have been cancelled and many buildings are without power after Typhoon Lan made landfall in the west of Japan early today.
Dozens of train lines between Tokyo and western Japan have also been suspended due to heavy rainfall and high winds.
The typhoon struck the southern tip of Wakayama prefecture on Japan’s main island of Honshu, about 250 miles south-west of Tokyo, battering the region with winds of more than 90mph.
It is moving north-west across the western part of Honshu today, bringing heavy rain as well as strong winds to the central and west of the country.
Flightradar24 is showing severe disruption at both Osaka and Nagoya airports, both of which are on Honshu.
However, flights between the UK and Tokyo appeared to be operating as normal today, with no more than slight delays.
The Foreign Office (FCDO) said Brits in the affected area should monitor advice issued by national and local authorities, adding that the progress of the typhoon can be monitored via the Japan Meteorological Agency and via NHK News.
There is also an extreme weather warning for southern Norway for today and Wednesday due to heavy rain and the risk of floods and landslides.
