Airports in north Vietnam have been ordered to suspend flights on Saturday as ‘super’ Typhoon Yagi continues its devastating path through the region.

The Foreign Office is warning Yagi, which has already wreaked havoc in northern Philippines, leaving at least 16 dead, will bring high winds and heavy rain, possibly causing flooding and landslides in Vietnam.

Yagi has also lashed southern China and Hong Kong with heavy rain, causing the main bridge link to Macau and Guangdong to close. Flights to and from Hong Kong are operating today, but with some delays.

The ‘super typhoon’, which has the same force as a category five hurricane, is expected to make landfall on the Chinese holiday island of Hainan later today, before reaching Vietnam on Saturday.

Trains, ferries and flights have been suspended in Hainan for a second day today and all tourist attractions have closed.

Tourists in Vietnam have been told to follow the advice of local authorities and their hotels, including any evacuation orders.

Van Don airport in Quang Ninh Province will close from 4am to 4pm on Saturday, Cat Bi airport of Hai Phong will close from 5am to 4pm, Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport will suspend flights from 10 am to 7pm, and Tho Xuan airport of central Thanh Hoa Province will close from noon to 10pm.

Authorities in Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Nghe An are expected to enforce sea bans from today (6 September), said the Foreign Office.
