Authorities are warning of ‘extreme danger’ in Barcelona, where torrential rain has closed a number of main roads and flooded El Prat Airport.
Arriving flights have been cancelled, diverted or delayed, including numerous services from London, Manchester and Liverpool.
Flooding in the neighbouring Valencia region has already killed 217 people, and some 2,000 more are missing.
A red weather warning has been issued for Barcelona, where there is expected to be ‘continuous and torrential’ rain.
People have been warned to avoid travel and to keep away from streams and ravines.
The rest of the Catalonia region is under amber and yellow warnings.
So far this afternoon, more than 70 flights at Barcelona’s El Prat airport have been cancelled and 17 have been diverted after the terminal building was flooded and the runway submerged.
All commuter trains have been cancelled in northeast Catalonia.
