Fort Lauderdale International Airport was due to reopen at 9am local time today following the draining of flood water that had turned its runways into rivers.

More than two feet of rain fell in South Florida in six hours, forcing the airport to close yesterday due to the amount of debris and excess water.

Fort Lauderdale has declared a state of national emergency, but the airport tweeted that it will reopen today.

In addition to serving southern Florida, Fort Lauderdale International is also the gateway for city’s cruise terminals.

The airport said passengers should check with their airlines for an update on their flights before heading to the airport.

Miami meteorologist Shawn Bhatti said the flooding in Fort Lauderdale was ‘one in a thousand’ event.
