A second major hurricane is less than two weeks is heading to Florida, with a state of emergency declared in some parts of the region.

Storm Milton strengthened to a category one hurricane on Sunday and is forecast to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday as a major hurricane, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

At 7pm EDT on Sunday, Milton was about 780 miles west-southwest of Tampa, with winds of up to 85mph. The NHC warned of ‘life-threatening hazards for some parts of the west coast of Florida’.

The storm is currently off the coast of Mexico, where a hurricane watch is in effect for the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

It comes 10 days after Hurricane Helene, hit the US as a category four hurricane hit the south east, killing at least 225 people.

The latest warning from the NHC, on Monday morning, said Milton was ‘moving erratically eastward through the southern Gulf of Mexico’ and is ‘likely to become a major hurricane later today’.
