The Foreign Office (FCDO) has strengthened its advice for countries in the Middle East as the conflict between Israel and Gaza continues to escalate.
A large swath of north Sinai in north-east Egypt closest to Gaza border has been designated a no-go zone. Egypt has recently closed its border crossing into Gaza at Rafah following repeated missile strikes.
“There are frequent reports of terrorist attacks in North Sinai,” said the FCDO. “Most attacks are in the northeast corner of the governorate between Al-Arish city and the border with Gaza, but the whole of the North Sinai Governorate is at risk. A state of emergency in North Sinai is in effect and a curfew is in place.”
At the same time, the advice for Lebanon has also been updated, with the UK now advising against all but essential travel to the country.
There was “ongoing mortar and artillery exchanges in South Lebanon”, which borders Israel, it says. The advice warns: “Tensions are high and events could escalate with little warning, which could affect or limit exit routes out of Lebanon. You should consider whether your need to remain in Lebanon is essential.
The update rules out travel to the Roman remains at Baalbeck, a favourite with tourists.
While the FCDO acknowledged that Jordon is safe and stable, it also warned that an area within 3km of the border with Syria should be avoided. In addition, it said the border with Israel could close at any time given the on-going conflict and that visitors should keep a close eye on travel advice.
