The Foreign Office is warning of flooding in Kenya as the country continues to be battered by Cyclone Hidaya, which has already claimed 188 lives.
Kenya Airways is also warning of possible long delays to its flights out of Nairobi due to heavy rains and traffic on roads to the airport.
In an update to its travel advice, the Foreign Office said: “Kenya is experiencing heavy rains which are causing widespread flooding.”
It advised visitors to avoid walking, swimming or driving through floodwater and suggested they plan journeys ‘carefully’.
It added: “Consider following the Kenya Meteorological Department and the Kenya National Highways Authority on Twitter to receive weather advisories and information on road closures.”
The Government has issued a mandatory evacuation order for people living in flood prone areas, and there are fears the storm could hit the coastal region.
“The coastal region is likely to experience Cyclone Hidaya, which will result in heavy rainfall and large waves,” the Cabinet said in a statement earlier today.
It said Hidaya will bring strong winds that could affect marine activities in the Indian Ocean.
Thunderstorm should be expected and bands of showers, it added, saying that the bad weather could continue into June, especially in the coastal and western regions of Kenya.
