Mexico’s south-east coast is being lashed by heavy rain as Tropical Storm Alberto barrels towards the country.

The Foreign Office warned many regions are being affected, including the Yucutan Peninsula.

Cancun, on the northeast tip, is the most popular tourist resort in the affected region. Five beaches in the resort were closed yesterday due to fears that the storm could cause giant waves, and several others had yellow flag warnings.

In a travel update issued this morning, the Foreign Office said flooding and mudslides along the south-east coast are ‘likely’.

Alberto is due to make landfall on the coast of Tamaulipas, in the northeast of Mexico, today.
