The Foreign Office is warning of possible terror attacks in both Lithuania and Sweden.
It did not say why it has issued specific warnings for these two EU countries.
When Travel Gossip asked if there was a new threat to tourists in Sweden and Lithuania, the Foreign Office referred us to its travel advice, which says: “The safety of British nationals is always our main concern in determining our travel advice.
“We constantly review our travel advice for each country or territory to ensure it includes up-to-date information and advice on the most relevant issues for British people visiting or living there.”
In an update issued today, the Foreign Office said: “Terrorist attacks in Lithuania can’t be ruled out.”
It adds: “You should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
“There is a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”
In new advice for travellers to Sweden, the Foreign Office said: “Terrorists are likely to try and carry out attacks in Sweden. You should maintain a high level of vigilance in public spaces.”
The Foreign Office was already warning that terrorist attacks are ‘likely’, ‘highly or very likely’, or ‘can’t be ruled out’ in a number of popular holiday destinations, including France, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey and Croatia.
