Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast was left almost entirely cut off due to damage caused by Hurricane Otis last night.
Both the city’s airports were closed due to infrastructure damage, the main Mexico-Acapulco Highway was blocked by a landslide, and hotel windows were shattered.
The highway has since reopened, but only for emergency vehicles.
In an update to its travel advice, the Foreign Office said the post-storm situation ‘remains dangerous’.
It said: “There are reports of significant damage to infrastructure in Acapulco and along Mexico’s southern coast between Zihuatenejo and Punta Maldonado, including hotels, transport, communications, and health services.”
It said roads in the region have suffered flooding, mudslides and crashes.
The Foreign Office added: “Be aware that historically more accidents occur post-storm than during it. The storm is not the only hazard; many electric lines will be down and some buildings may not be structurally sound.”
Otis, which has since lost some of its power, is expected to bring up to 51cms of rain across Guerrero and western coastal areas of the neighbouring Oaxaca state on Friday.
