The UK Foreign Office is warning of the risk of another eruption in its latest update for Iceland.
The warning is for the Askja area (pictured), in the central Highlands of Iceland.
Askja is a popular tourist destination, and the roads are usually only open from around late June until early October.
The area was used by NASA during training for the Apollo programme to prepare astronauts for lunar missions.
The warning reports lava might be brewing in the Askja caldera (the depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses) under the lake, after recording rising temperatures.
The FCDO said: “Volcanic activity has been detected in the Askja area.
“The Icelandic authorities continue to monitor the area closely. You should follow authorities’ advice on travel to the area.”
It added risks include travel delays and cancellations, poisonous volcanic gases, rock falls and landslides, as well as flooding.
Visitors to the area are advised to check for alerts and advice from the Icelandic Met Office and Safe Travel Iceland.
