The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued a warning over Hurricane Ernesto, which is gaining strength as it heads towards Bermuda.

Storm Ernesto strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday after passing Puerto Rico and is forecast to strengthen further before reaching Bermuda late on Friday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The NHC warned: “Additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and Ernesto could be near major hurricane strength on Friday. Ernesto is forecast to be a large hurricane near Bermuda on Saturday.”

Bermuda’s Minister of National Security Michael Weeks said LF Wade International Airport will close at 8pm on Friday and told people due to fly over the weekend to check their flight status with their airline.

Roads will also be closed, ferries will not run today or Saturday and the Minister warned people who haven’t prepared for the hurricane that ‘time is running out’.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) said: “A hurricane warning is now in effect for Bermuda.”

It said British nationals should follow the latest advice on the Bermuda Government website, the Bermuda Weather Service and Bermuda’s Emergency Radio Channel 100.1fm, which is due to start broadcasts from 8pm local time on Friday.
