The Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued a warning after Hurricane John made landfall on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast overnight.
The category three storm hit the coast south of Marquelia in the state of Guerrero, bringing winds of up 120mph and heavy rain, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
A red weather alert is in place in parts of Guerrero and neighbouring Oaxaca state and Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged people near the coast to move inland.
The FCDO warned: “You should closely monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities and your tour operator, including any evacuation orders.
“In the aftermath of a hurricane, there can be flooding, high winds and continued rainfall.”
Hurricane John has since been downgraded to a category two storm and is expected to move further inland near the coast of southern Mexico later today.
