The Foreign Office has warned of disruptions to road travel and targeting of parked vehicles in France amid ongoing violent protests across the country after a police officer fatally shot a teenager.

At least 180 people have been arrested and 170 officers have been injured following a second night of violence sparked by the shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M on Tuesday.

The incident triggered initial protests in Nanterre – the area where the teenager was killed, which is around a 30-minute drive west of the Eiffel Tower.

Vehicles have been set on fire in Nanterre and police fired tear gas.

In Lille, cars and buildings have been destroyed after clashes with protesters and police overnight.

The FCDO said: “Since 27 June, protests have taken place in Paris and other locations across France. Some have turned violent.

“The protests may lead to disruptions to road travel or targeting of parked cars in areas where protests take place.

“You should monitor the media, avoid protests, check the latest advice with operators when travelling and follow the advice of the authorities.”

Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin confirmed 40,000 police officers would be mobilised on Thursday (29 June) night.

The officer accused of the fatal shooting is now under formal investigation for voluntary homicide, the BBC reports.

The incident is the second fatal shooting by police this year.
