Ecuador has declared a 60-day nationwide state of emergency following the assassination of a presidential candidate in the capital Quito on Monday.

The shooting of 59-year-old anti-corruption campaigner Fernando Villavicenciio happened as he was leaving a campaign rally in the city, one of two gateways to the popular Galápagos islands.

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice on Thursday to warn Brits to avoid any potential demonstrations, large or political gatherings.

It also said they should be aware of an additional police presence and more soldiers in the streets.
