Four people have died and more than 50 have been injured after an earthquake struck Taiwan during Wednesday morning’s rush hour.
The strongest earthquake to hit the country in 25 years caused buildings to collapse and left 87,000 homes without power.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “On Wednesday 3 April 2024 at 07:58 local time, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Eastern Taiwan with shocks felt all across the island including Taipei.
“Aftershocks continue to occur and you should expect travel disruption. You should consult the Central Weather Administration website and other official sources for more information.”
The earthquake could be felt right across the island, including in the capital Taipei in the north, and as far away as south-east China and Japan.
The worst damage was in Taiwan’s Hualien County where a first floor of a five-storey building collapsed.
