The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for France, warning British travellers to be prepared for longer delays this summer.

The FCDO said: “If you are travelling between the UK and France during the peak period of July and August, you may experience longer than usual queues at ports and terminals.

“Monitor your travel operator’s website and social media, and follow the advice of the authorities, and ensure you are prepared for potential delays with enough food and water.”

Earlier this week, families driving to the continent at the start of the school summer holidays were warned to expect two-and-a-half hour delays at Dover over the two busiest weekends.

The Port of Dover blamed tighter passport checks introduced post-Brexit for the extended processing times.

However, it urged drivers not to turn up more than three hours before their scheduled crossing to avoid creating further congestion.

The FCDO added: “If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.”
