The UK Foreign Office has warned British travellers to the US to be prepared for an ‘above-normal Atlantic hurricane season’.
It follows the forecast from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that there could be increased hurricane activity this year.
NOAA’s outlook predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, which could include four to seven major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5, with winds of 111 mph or higher).
Earlier this week Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida, killing five people, causing power cuts to 150,000 homes and bringing widespread flooding
The Foreign Office has advised Brits in the US to monitor the weather and the US National Hurricane Center website, and if necessary, follow advice from local authorities, including evacuation orders.
The Atlantic hurricane season normally runs from June to November and the Pacific hurricane season runs from May to November.
