Flights to and from Jamaica have been cancelled as the island prepares to be hit by Hurricane Beryl.
Both domestic and international airports on the island have closed and the Foreign Office (FCDO) said they will only reopen ‘when assessed safe to do so’.
The FCDO said: “Weather projections forecast a major hurricane to hit Jamaica, possible as early as the morning of Wednesday 3 July.”
It said neighbouring Caribbean islands could also be hit this week. Storm warnings have been issued for the Cayman Islands.
Beryl has already left a trail of destruction across the region, having made landfall in the Windward island and battering the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, killing at least seven people.
Barbados and St Lucia also endured strong winds and storm surges. In a statement issued yesterday, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority said: “Our hotel partners, as reported on by the St. Lucia Hospitality & Tourism Association (SLHTA) have fared well and will continue to welcome guests. All guests are properly cared for and are safe within their respective accommodations.
“The road network has been deemed safe to use. The electricity grid remains intact and there are no reports of interruptions to the water supply.” St Lucia’s airport reopened yesterday after the storm had passed.
Beryl gathered strength to become a category five hurricane earlier this week and while it has since lost some of its power, it remains a potential deadly category four storm, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Updating its travel advice for Jamaica, the Foreign Office said: “You should follow and monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities including any evacuation orders.”
Princess Cruises has re-routed Enchanted Princess to avoid the storm during its seven-day cruise, which departed last Saturday. The ship will no longer call at Belize today and will instead visit Cozumel in Mexico rather than tomorrow.
The ship will spend tomorrow at sea en route to Nassau, Bahamas where guests will spend the day on Friday. The ship will then disembark as scheduled at Port Everglades on Saturday.
