The UK Foreign Office has warned Brits in Greece that planned demonstrations in key universities cities later this week could turn violent.
Major demonstrations usually take place each year on 17 November to commemorate the Athens Polytechnic University student uprising against the ruling military junta in 1973.
The FCDO said: “There are planned demonstrations on 17 November in Athens and major university cities, including Thessaloniki and Heraklion. These demonstrations could become violent and security forces may deploy tear gas.
“If you are in areas where demonstrations are taking place, remain vigilant, move away quickly from the area, stay aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities.”
The Real Greek Experience website said the protests usually begin peacefully in the early afternoon, but tend to ‘escalate to acts of violence between demonstrators and police later in the day’. This year is the 50th anniversary of uprising.
The FCDO advice for Greece also warns that authorities have increased security at some prominent locations, including tourist sites, due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
“Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities. Follow “112 Greece” on X (formerly known as Twitter) for official updates,” the FCDO adds.
