The Foreign Office is warning British tourists that potentially violent protests could break out in Peru this week.
A state of emergency was extended in the South American country for another 30 days after a wave of protests were announced between 19 and 28 July.
Protestors have made several demands, including the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closing of Congress and early elections.
The Foreign Office (FCDO) said: “Political protests in Peru are unpredictable and can escalate quickly and include violence.
“You should take particular care to avoid large gatherings and all areas of protests. If there are protests and it is possible, you should remain in a safe place.
“Protests may cause travel disruption, including with road blockades, suspension of train services and airport closures including in tourist areas. A large political protest has been announced for 19 July.
“A related state of emergency has been declared in anticipation of road travel disruptions.”
It added that Brits in the country should follow the local authorities’ advice and monitor local media and social media channels.
Peru has been in a state of emergency since last December and in February the FCDO issued a warning about the security situation when political protests led to road blockades, suspension of train services and airport closures.
The country attracted more than two million tourists last year but prior to the pandemic would typically welcome more than 4.5 million visitors annually.
