The Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for South Africa to warn of recent violent attacks on tourists in Cape Town.
It said attacks have occurred on secondary roads near the airport and there have been a number of violent attacks and muggings on hikers and tourists in Table Mountain National Park, including at Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.
“Take care in quieter, isolated areas of the park, especially during early mornings and evenings,” it said. “Stick to busy marked trails on popular days such as weekends, and do not hike alone.”
The FCDO said some Cape Town residents use social media platforms such as The Hikers Network, Meet up, Facebook to coordinate hikes in larger groups.
Also, The Hikers Network offers a free safety tracking service to all mountain users, it added, while directing visitors to the South African Nationals Parks website for more on hiking on Table Mountain.
When driving from Cape Town International Airport, the FCDO urges British visitors to stick to the M3 and N2 where possible and avoid taking routes that use the R300.
