The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to the US to warn of wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, where six people have died.
Several other people are missing, while there are reports that local hospitals are full of victims suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Major Richard Bissen Jr told local media the area was ‘still in search and rescue mode’.
US Senator Brian Schatz said on social media that Lahaina in the west of the island (pictured above), which includes the beach resorts of Kaanapali and Kapalua, was ‘almost totally burnt to the ground’.
The Foreign Office (FCDO) said: “Wildfires are affecting a number of areas of Maui County in Hawaii. Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly.
“Visit the Maui County Alert Center website and Facebook page for up-to-date information from the local government including details on evacuation areas.”
It said people travelling in an area that might be affected by the fires, should contact their tour operator or accommodation provider before they travel to check that it’s not currently impacted.
The FCDO also urged travellers to make sure they have appropriate insurance.
