The owners of Shrewsbury Prison have confirmed that the former jail is set to become a 20-room boutique hotel and event venue.
The old HMP Shrewsbury site – also known as The Dana – was completed in 1793 and was a functioning prison until 2013. Now the current owners, The Cove Group, are planning to turn the landmark into a ‘world-renowned tourist attraction’.
Each hotel room will have an immersive experience relating to the prison’s history and the restaurant will have space for up 120 people.
The prison already holds events including escape rooms, dinner behind bars and overnight stays in the cells. The new development plans will add conference and event spaces and a 72-space car park with provisions for EV charging, accessible parking, and bike racks.
Cove Group CEO Joel Campbell, said: “Transforming Shrewsbury Prison into a world-class destination represents a unique and thrilling venture for us. This project is not just about preserving a piece of history; it’s about redefining the visitor experience.
