Five foreign tourists, including four Brits, have been fined €36,000 each for balconing at hotels in Magaluf in Majorca.

Balconing is where people either dive from their hotel or apartment balcony into a pool, or climb from their balcony to another room.

The town hall in the municipality of Calvia, which includes Magaluf, confirmed to the Majorca Daily Bulletin that fines had been issued to four British and one Swedish tourist under the tourism of excesses law.

The town hall’s Director-General Juan Feliu told the local paper:”Balconing is not tolerated in our municipality. It is an irresponsible practice that can cause serious, irreversible injuries and even death.”

There has been an intensification of police efforts to control balconing since the new administration took over in June.

The most recent case was at six in the morning last Monday.

The town hall hasn’t stated if the fines have been paid, are being paid or how it intends to pursue them.
