A two-night cruise on Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral has been cancelled due to a sickness outbreak on a previous sailing.

The ship was due to leave Southampton this evening, sailing to Newcastle from where it will depart on a nine-day cruise to Norway on Friday.

However, passengers due to board Balmoral in Southampton today for the short trip to Newcastle have been told their cruise has been cancelled.

The cruise line said passengers from a previous Northern Lights cruise had reported signs of a gastro-intestinal illness so the ship will have to be deep-cleaned.

A spokesperson told the Independent: “For the safety and comfort of our guests, we will be completing a deep clean upon our arrival into Southampton, which will cause delays to our planned departure time on this short cruise.

“In addition, sailing with no guests on board will enable this deep clean to be as effective as possible before new guests embark in Newcastle.”

Fed. Olsen added: “All guests who were due to join us on this cruise have been offered the chance to transfer their booking to Bolette’s two-night spring mini cruise in April, or receive a full refund.”
