Holidaymakers are being warned of possible delays to ferry travel over the Easter bank holiday weekend as high levels of cross-channel traffic on all routes are expected.

Last weekend, coaches were held in lengthy queues at the port of Dover as post-Brexit passport checks added significantly to processing times.

Strike action in France is likely to compound the problem over the bank holiday, according to the Foreign Office (FCDO).

French workers are due to walk out tomorrow but disruption to travel could start as early as this evening and last for several days, said the FCDO.

In an update to its travel advice, it said: “There is a possibility of delays over the Easter bank holiday weekend as high levels of cross-channel traffic on all routes are expected.

“Check for latest information with your travel operator, including their advice on how early you should arrive at the terminal. Where possible, you should make sure you have a confirmed booking before you travel and ensure you are fully prepared for your trip with enough food and water.”

It added: “There is also ongoing strike action affecting multiple sectors including transport networks.

“Coordinated strike action and large-scale demonstrations are next planned for Thursday 6 April. Industrial action may start the evening before the strike day and run for several days.”

The FCDO has previously warned travellers of the risk of violent protests in France during strikes.

Eurostar has cancelled two trains tomorrow, its 10:26 London to Paris departure and its 07:13 departure from Paris to St Pancras.

The train operator says it isn’t expecting any more cancellations.

Flights are also likely to be disrupted tomorrow as French air traffic controllers will join the nationwide strike.

Airlines have been asked to reduce schedules to and from Paris Orly and some other French airports.

Air France has reduced its short-haul flights from airports, except Paris Charles de Gaulle, by 20%.
