More than two million Brits will head overseas over the next three days, while Jet2 says this weekend will be the busiest in its history.

ABTA says today, (Friday 26 July), is expected to be the busiest for departures, with Spain still the number-one destination for families, particularly the Costa del Sol, the Balearic and Canary Islands.

ABTA members are also reporting strong demand for Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, Italy, Malta and Cyprus, as well as Florida and Dubai. Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona and Lisbon are the most popular city breaks.

Jet2 said this weekend will be the busiest in its history, with more than 175,000 customers travelling on almost 1,000 flights with Jet2.com and Jet2holidays on Saturday and Sunday.

Jet2’s three most popular destinations customers are Majorca, Tenerife and Faro.

CEO Steve Heapy said: “The start of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the peak summer season, so this time of year is traditionally always a busy time for us.

“However, this demand combined with our continued growth means that this year we will have a record-breaking weekend, and it will be our busiest Saturday and Sunday ever in Jet2.com and Jet2holidays’ history. Whether it is families, couples, groups or solo travellers, our data shows that all types of customers are very eager to get some much-needed summer sun.”

ABTA said hundreds of thousands of passengers are expected to depart from Heathrow and Gatwick, 200,000 from Stansted, 116,000 from Luton, 210,000 from Manchester and 75,000 from Bristol.

Although the Scottish schools are already well into their summer holidays, many will still be leaving from Scottish airports this weekend, while other regional airports, ports and the Channel Tunnel will also be busy.

ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer said: “Thousands of families will be jetting off this weekend as the majority of schools in the UK start their summer break. After months of cloud and rain families will be particularly keen to enjoy the warmth and sunshine of their favourite overseas holiday destinations.

“As always at busy times of year, leave plenty of time to get to the air or ferry port and arrive at the time recommended by your airline or departure port. We’re also encouraging travellers to take the time to check the essentials are sorted for their holiday, including travel insurance.”
