Greece has confirmed it will offer free seven-night holidays to British tourists forced to flee last summer’s Rhodes wildfires

The Greek Finance Ministry is about to launch a Rhodes Pass, giving free accommodation this spring or autumn to those affected.

Holidaymakers who were evacuated from hotels on Rhodes during the fires in July 2023 will be entitled to a free seven-night stay between 15 March and 15 May 2024 or between 1 October and 15 November 2024.

The Greek Government has set aside €4 million to fund the initiative, according to local reports.

Greek National Tourism Organisation UK Director Eleni Skarveli said she was waiting for confirmation of the practical details, including the launch of an app to facilitate the free trips.

Thousands of tourists, many of them British, were forced to run from hotels in Rhodes during the fires in the south-east of the island, leaving their belongings behind. Some 20,000 holidaymakers had their trips cut short, returning home early due to hotel closures.

However, only a few hotels in the area suffered significant damage and most were able to reopen within days.

UK operators, including Jet2holidays, have reported strong bookings again for Rhodes this summer, suggesting the fires have caused no lasting damage to the island’s tourism.
