A planned strike by Greek air traffic control workers today (Thursday) has been called off after a court in Athens ruled it illegal.
The court decision came on Wednesday evening, hours before the 24-hour walkout was due to start.
ATC workers had said they were coming out in support of national civil servants who are protesting today about planned changes to employment laws.
A strike by Metro workers in Athens was also ruled illegal but other workers are still taking industrial action and there are warnings more may decide to join the general strike without warning.
The UK Foreign Office updated its advice on Wednesday afternoon to say: “A general strike has been called in Greece for Thursday 21 September (00:01 – 24:00).
“Ferries may be affected and many airports may closed. Check with your transport provider if you are planning to travel by sea or air on 21 September. Buses and Metro services may also be affected.
“Protests are scheduled across the country with two major rallies scheduled in Athens.”
