Grenada will launch a new training programme for UK travel agents this autumn, which will include a bookings incentive.

Points earned for bookings can be spent on islands in Grenada, which include Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

They can be used for discounts on products and services, such as hotel accommodation and car hire.

The new seven-module training programme, covering topics such as luxury, culinary, diving and which hotels suit which guests is being planned as Grenada recovers from Hurricane Beryl, which tore through the Caribbean islands in early July.

Tourism infrastructure on Grenada’s main island was undamaged, but the neighbouring islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinque were flattened.

Grenada Tourism Authority Chairman Randall Dolland said that, while devastating, the hurricane had presented the islands with an opportunity to rebuild in a more sustainable way, using more hurricane-resistant materials and creating more quality accommodation.

A new Underwater Sculpture Park will open in October, along with an underwater chapel, which will perform its first wedding on 26 October.

Day trips to Petite Martinique and Carriacou from the main island will resume at the start of the coming winter season, although it will be a while longer before hotels are ready to welcome back overnight visitors.

Meanwhile, the main island of Grenada has two new hotels for the winter – Silversands Beach House, which opened in February, and Six Senses, which opened in April.

A third Silversands hotel will open in 2026, as will a new 120-room InterContinental.

Grenada Tourism CEO Petra Roach said the destination is keen to grow visitor numbers from the UK, its second biggest market, following a 12.3% year on year increase for the period from January to July.

While the US is by far the biggest market, accounting for 55% of all visitors to Grenada, the UK sends more guests to the islands’ luxury hotels, the majority of which have 30 to 80 rooms.

“We have identified this as an opportunity for growth,” said Petra. “The British visitor will stay longer which means their contribution is quite strong. We really want to continue to focus on this and grow the market more.”
