Holland America Line says it has ‘initiated enhanced sanitation protocols’ on Koningsdam after more than 100 passengers and crew were struck down with norovirus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on 11 March that 98 out of,2,522 (3.89%) passengers and 12 crew were suffering with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Koningsdam is currently sailing a 35-day cruise to Hawaii and French Polynesia from San Diego, which is due to finish on 24 March.

The CDC has said that in response to the outbreak, HAL’s crew have increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and ill passengers and crew have been isolated to prevent the spread.

A spokesperson for HAL said: “At Holland America Line, the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is our top priority. During the current voyage, a number of guests on Koningsdam reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimise further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.
