Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) plans to introduce new high-speed internet across its fleet to improve connectivity for passengers.
The company, which operates Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, is currently testing SpaceX’s Starlink on Norwegian Breakaway (pictured).
NCLH is one of several cruise companies to turn to Starlink to power its onboard internet.
More than 3,000 Starlink satellites, offering broadband connectivity to users, are in space, according to SpaceX, which was founded by billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002.
NCLH said it plans to roll out Starlink in ‘a phased manner’.
The firm added that if trials being carried out on Breakaway are successful, seven more ships would be fitted with Starlink by the end of the year.
Incoming ships – Oceania Vista, Norwegian Viva and Seven Seas Grandeur – will be among the first in the NCLH fleet to be fitted with Starlink.
The company is currently finalising installation dates for each ship.
NCLH claims the ‘extra bandwidth will also allow for more flexibility for onboard services and improve the ship-to-shore connection’.
Harry Sommer, President and Chief Executive-elect of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, said: “Once deployed, guests and crew will have a faster and more reliable method to stay connected with friends and family including by sharing in real-time the incredible memories they create while at sea.”
