The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) is warning there is still a danger of life-threatening storm surges as Hurricane Milton makes its way through Florida.

Milton made landfall as a category three storm near Siesta Key in Sarasota County around 8.30pm local time on Wednesday, bringing sustained winds of 120mph and leaving more than 1.5 million homes and businesses without power, the NHC said.

It weakened to a category one hurricane overnight and is moving off the coast of east-central Florida, over the Atlantic, with winds of 90mph, but storm surge warnings are still in place.

The NHC said at 5am EDT (9am UK time): “There is a danger of life-threatening storm surge along the coast from east-central Florida northward to southern Georgia, where a Storm Surge Warning remains in effect.

“Damaging hurricane-force winds, especially in gusts, will continue for a few more hours in east-central and northeastern Florida. Residents are urged to remain in an interior room and away from windows.

“Heavy rainfall across the central to northern Florida Peninsula through this morning continues to bring the risk of considerable flash and urban flooding.”

Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and TUI cancelled flights to Florida yesterday and today as local airports closed.
